Product Details

Lotus is a stunning aquatic flowering plant. It's deeply symbolic in Indian culture and grows beautifully in water. A rewarding choice for ponds, tubs, and water gardens.

Sowing

Scrape seeds first - gently file or nick the hard outer shell (avoid damaging the inner seed) to help water penetrate.
Soak scarified seeds in a glass of water, changing the water daily.
Best time to sow: March to June, ahead of the warm growing season.
Keep the container in a warm, bright spot. Seeds will sink and start sprouting in the water itself.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 5–10 days, once scarified and soaked.
A small leaf will appear floating on the water surface.
Keep water clean and change it every 1–2 days until roots form

Transplanting

Once the seedling has 2–3 leaves and visible roots, it's ready to move to its permanent spot.
Plant the tuber/rooted seedling into a container of heavy garden soil or Ugaoo's Potting Mix, placed at the base of a pond or large water tub.
Submerge so the growing tip stays a few cm below the water surface. Gradually increase water depth as the plant grows.
Do this in a warm spot, avoiding cold water shock.

Growing

Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Keep in standing water at all times, 15–30 cm deep depending on plant size.
Use a heavy, nutrient-rich soil so the container doesn't float, with no drainage holes since it grows submerged.
Space plants at least 60–90 cm apart if growing multiple in a large pond.
Feed with Ugaoo's Plant Fertilizer Pellets pushed gently into the soil every 25–30 days. Use neem oil spray on leaves if pests appear.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Don't let dried flowers or yellowing leaves sit too long in the water. Remove them to keep the water clean.
Reduced flowering signals the plant is entering dormancy.
Cooler temperatures from October onwards trigger dormancy, growth slows and leaves die back.
The tuber survives winter underwater. Reduce feeding and let it rest, then growth resumes on its own in spring.

Harvesting

Flowers are ready for harvest/blooming in 90–120 days.
Cut flower stems underwater with a sharp knife, just above the base, for the best vase life.
A healthy plant can keep flowering through the warm season.
