The garden path should never be less than 60 cm wide but should be perfectly between 90 and 120 cm, if sufficient space is available. A wider path allows easy passage for wheelbarrows & other garden implements. Paths should not be too high or too low from the adjoining ground except in a marsh or a rock garden. Too many paths, especially in a small garden, may spoil the artistic value.
Garden paths materials:
The materials used for garden paths are gravel, bricks, paving stones, & crazy pavings. Although concrete is not used for garden paths, it is possible to have concrete paving. This can be made attractive by drawing crazy patterns of artificial crevices over the flat surface before the concrete solidifies.
Brick path:
Bricks arranged as in the walls have a formal effect. They may look attractive if arranged informally too. But it would be better if broken bricks were joined in irregular shapes. A cost effective idea indeed!
Stone paving:
Stones are available in many natural hues, in regular as well as irregular shapes, and create delightful effects. You could substitute them with mortar rubbles in irregular shapes. Read more about cool outdoor hardscaping ideas.
Gravel path:
Small boulders, topped with colourful gravel & beaten firm can also make an attractive garden path contrasting beautifully with the green plants.
Crazy Paving:
In this paving, stones of different sizes & irregular shapes are used. River stones in natural colors and shapes also make great crazy paving, provided they are properly embedded in soil and sand.
Grass paths:
If the path is needed for only morning & evening stroll, the most desirable and attractive will be a grass path. The best way to make a grass path is from turfs.
Apart from these, the garden path can be made by a variety of material like Paver blocks, broken tiles, or even well rolled fine red soil.
